The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial Wednesday 1/28/2009 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Performed by L.A. Theatre Works
Starring Edward Asner (William Jennings Bryan), John Heard (Clarence Darrow), Arye Gross (Arthur Garfield Hayes), Jerry Hardin (Judge John Raulston) and James Gleason (H.L. Mencken).
It's the summer of 1925 and the place is a sweltering Southern courtroom where the Tennessee vs. John Scopes "Monkey Trial" took place. The trial challenged the newly passed act banning the teaching of evolution in Tennessee's public schools. This riveting radio theatre performance is based entirely on original transcripts of the famous trial and all its stranger-than-fiction happenings. The performance is just in time for Darwin's 200th birthday and the 150th anniversary of "The Origin of Species."

BLOCK 8 Friday 2/20/2009 8:00 pm - 9:15 pm

Plan-B Theatre Company presents the world premiere of Matthew Ivan Bennett's BLOCK 8.

Ten Japanese internment camps were in operation on American soil during World War II. One of them, Topaz, was located sixteen miles outside of Delta, Utah. How could such a thing happen? In a post-9/11 world, could it happen again?

BLOCK 8 centers on Ken (Bryan Kido), a young Nisei internee at Topaz, who is grappling with whether or not to enlist in the military to prove his loyalty as a U.S. citizen. He begins a tentative friendship with Ada (Anita Booher), a librarian working at the camp whose son is fighting in the Pacific.

BLOCK 8 is the centerpiece of the 2009 Day of Remembrance events, pays respect to Japanese Americans forced to report to internment camps during WWII.

One Night of Queen Thursday 2/26/2009 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

There was only one Freddie Mercury: lead singer of Queen who rocked us with his circus-like flamboyance, addictive voice, and wildy popular songs in the 80's. But meet Gary Mullen who has been called Freddie's best imitator and who, with his band "The Works," takes us to circa 1986 for One Night of Queen, a delirious two-hour concert recreating the music of Queen with theatrics that'll make you wonder if Freddie's been reincarnated.

Coops de Ville: How to Raise Backyard Chickens Workshop Sunday 3/1/2009 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

As anyone who has ever had a farm-fresh egg can tell you, there is a world of difference between the right-from-the-hen variety and those that come fresh from the store. Sounds good, but where there are eggs, there are chickens; and where there are chickens, there is responsibility. Find out how to do it right from start to finish in this class. We'll cover preparation; breed selection; housing, food, and water; chickens and your garden; legalities and your neighborhood; hazards and health management; raising chicks; and collecting and storing eggs. We'll also review the age-old question: Which came first?

Bobby McFerrin Saturday 3/7/2009 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Welcome back the famous one-man-band, Bobby McFerrin, with his four-octave range and his jaw-dropping talent for vocalizing-he can even harmonize with himself! It was while working as a piano accompanist in the U's modern dance department that McFerrin first discovered he wanted to work as a singer; his first vocal gigs were at Salt Lake's Hilton hotel. He's the composer of the well-loved song "Don't Worry, Be Happy" and is a noted conductor. "The Los Angeles Times" calls Bobby gifted at changing ". . . spectators to celebrants and transforming a concert hall into a playground and a village center into a joyous space."
