The Future of Korea Thursday 10/23/2008
|
7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
|
| |
The Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy's Ambassador John Price and Marcia Price World Affairs Lecture Series, in partnership with American Express and Westminster College's Weldon J. Taylor Executive Lecture Series, presents a three-person panel discussion on "The Future of Korea."
South Korea's economic progress in the past 50 years is one of the great accomplishments of our times, as this country went from a poverty-stricken, war-ravaged nation with a per capita income of less than $70 to one of the world's leading industrial powers, with a per capita income of more than $20,000. Korea is now the world's eleventh-largest economy. Although the media tend to focus on North Korean nuclear and security issues, the United States and the Republic of Korea continue to develop ever-deepening economic, social and personal ties.
Ambassador Charles L. (Jack) Pritchard, President of the Korea Economic Institute (KEI) in Washington DC, will lead a three-person panel discussion focusing on US-Korean relations and Korea's economic and political situation. Prior to joining KEI, Ambassador Pritchard was a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington DC and served as ambassador and special envoy for negotiations to North Korea. The panel will also include a representative from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Washington DC and a representative from the US Department of State's Office of Korean Affairs.
The event is free and open to the public. |

Wanda Coleman Poetry Reading Friday 10/24/2008
|
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
|
| |
The Westminster College Anne Newman Sutton Weeks Poetry Series is pleased to present a poetry reading and book signing with Wanda Coleman on Friday, Oct. 24, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the Vieve Gore Concert Hall, located inside the Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory.
Wanda Coleman has published many books of poetry and prose, including Wanda Coleman's Greatest Hits 1966-2003 (2004) and a collection of short stories, Jazz and Twelve O' Clock Tales (2008). Her work has cultural roots deep into Tennessee and Mississippi, Arkansas, and Oklahoma, roots absorbed and twisted into a distinctly urban poetic voice uniquely Californian. Her honors include Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, an Emmy in daytime drama writing, and the 1999 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize. Vice & Verse calls her, a sophisticated beat hipster with echoes of Ginsberg, Blake, and Hughes an absolute music wiseword spinner with intense sound sense confections like Burroughs.
Admission is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow the event. For more information, visit www.westminstercollege.edu/cultural_events.

Food, Energy & The Future Monday 11/10/2008
|
7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
|
| |
The Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy's Ambassador John Price and Marcia Price World Affairs Lecture Series, in partnership with American Express and Westminster College's Weldon J. Taylor Executive Lecture Series, presents "Food, Energy, & The Future" by best-selling author, Paul Roberts.
How are the world's dramatically rising food costs connected to the global energy crisis? Why are our high-volume factory systems creating new risks for food-borne illnesses? Why is it that our high-yield crops and livestock generate grain, vegetables and meat of declining nutritional quality? Why is it that today nearly one billion people are overweight or obese worldwide, and yet one billion, roughly one in every seven of us, can't get enough to eat? In his most recent book, The End of Food, Paul Roberts explores how the rise of large-scale, hyper-efficient industrialized food production generates more food more cheaply than at any time in history and how this production has reached a point of dangerously diminishing returns.
In 2005, Roberts' best-selling book, The End of Oil, was a finalist for the New York Public Library Helen Bernstein Book Award. He writes as well as lectures frequently on business, economics, politics, and environmental issues and has been published in The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Harper’s Magazine, and Rolling Stone.
The lecture is free and open to the public. |
