Forget about the usual down-to-earth and let's-get-real attitude we've come to expect from May and the sign of Taurus, which occupies the first three weeks of the month. May 2007 is a discombobulated and discombobulating mixture of energies, and while the month still carries the "regular" lusty signature the poets have extolled in verse about May and its fertile sensuality, more than physical bodies are likely to be stimulated by an almost constant clash of contrasting planetary patterns. May's days and nights unfold with earnest industry, extraordinary excess and more than just a touch of strange. Which is why all month long it's hard to get grounded and to stay that way. Agitation is probable, as is an edgy unrest that is at once provocative and hypersensitive. But be aware, May is still the time of year we plant the gardens, tangible and intangible, that will be harvested in the fall. So even though you may feel scattered in a thousand directions this month, make an effort to stay conscious about the potential consequences of what you set in motion.
Two major configurations underscore the entire month. (1) The ongoing Jupiter-Saturn trine continues to provide a stable, reliable and predictable undercurrent of patience, perseverance, and determination. This trine began in March and continues through the end of May. At its best, this positive alliance facilitates structure and discipline based on a broad vision and a commitment to an integrated philosophy. At its worst, it's a "walk your talk or don't bother" configuration that separates the dilettante from the disciple.
(2) Unfortunately, the second major configuration of the month, a Jupiter-Uranus square, acts as antimatter to the Jupiter-Saturn trine. The square is unstable, unreliable and unpredictable, and its volatility is one of the reasons many of us will feel as if clouds of confusion obscure clarity. Both of these major configurations are complex, and trying to decipher how they will coalesce and manifest in daily life isn't possible. Best to think "Astro Uncertainty Principle" and you'll catch a whiff of what I mean. Opportunities (brought to you by Uranus) are likely to seem glorious (Jupiter's contribution) and gloomy (Saturn's signature) at the same time. The trick to successfully navigating the matter-antimatter maze of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus is realizing how the glory and the gloom are both created by, as well as dependent upon, your perspective. But if that's too heady (it is for me, and I wrote it), try channeling the Fool in the Tarot who holds an optimistic take on even the most dismal situations. This is one of archetypes of an open and trusting heart, unafraid of life's unpredictability. So ride this tide with an appreciation for how unexpected developments have the potential to transform problematic circumstances. And then, be prepared for others-those you love, as well as those you don't even know-to be highly reactive to those sudden shifts.
A Mars-Uranus conjunction from the 1st-6th provides plenty of chances to become proficient at handling surprises. When Mars and Uranus share the same space, even the air feels restless and discontented, and because both Mars and Uranus like to move, we experience an edgy need to put bodies in motion. Dance till you drop, if you must, but make sure you take care of those feet. What's more, Uranus sets nervous systems a-twitter, and that's sure to disturb sleep patterns. Also anticipate abrupt conversations, snap decisions and lots of no looking before leaping. These descriptions sound extreme, I know, but as Mars hooks into the Jupiter-Uranus square, the devotion to motion takes on a larger than life potential. A word of caution: Accidents are often associated with Mars-Uranus signatures, especially when that need for movement is fueled by drugs, alcohol, or bristling impatience, resentment, or frustration.
Unfortunately, from the 7th-20th, exact on the 13th, a Mars-Pluto square exacerbates a tendency toward belligerence and hostility. This negative alliance makes ruthlessness attractive, especially the kind of heartless cruelty that objectifies others. It takes a whole lot of effort to manage the intensity of this fractious interaction, so be sure to do whatever it is you do to handle situations with wisdom rather than self-indulgence.
Mars moves into Aries, its home sign, on the 15th, a position that lights and strengthens the fires of ambition. Be prepared for lots of people, including you, to need to succeed at everything. When the Sun moves into Gemini on the 21st, it also moves into a sextile with Mars that lasts until the end of the month. This positive relationship amplifies a competitive spirit, but it is essentially benign. And we like that, especially after the first two weeks of hard Mars contacts. This sextile isn't exactly mild-mannered, which means more than a few of us will be tempted to fly around like a superhero. But this sextile also isn't pernicious. It is a highly creative partnership that can be used to revitalize head as well as heart.
From the 20th-30th, a Venus-Uranus trine amplifies this creative spirit, as it excites the air with romance. Expect all sorts of fantasies and fancies to be indulged under this influence, especially extravagant eccentricities that thrive with flirtation. Remember, romance isn't confined to sexual arousal. Romance is the domain of dreamers and the essence of imagination.
As you cycle through the mishmash of planetary patterns this month, try to be kind to those around you who are less skillful at handling the uncertain flux of earthly existence. And if you decide to work with the energy of the Fool, keep in mind the Fool's foundation is an unshakeable belief in the ultimate goodness of Being.
If you know your ascendant and/or your Moon sign, read that too.
Aries March 21-April 19
It's not that you're moving from a parked position into overdrive - you've been gathering momentum for months. You're moving from high gear into hyperspace, with barely a moment to catch your breath. So buckle up and be prepared for a wildly exciting ride.
Taurus April 20-May 20
No matter how overscheduled you may be, please leave room for quiet reflection and contemplation, particularly by the middle of the month, when you'll definitely need a break from the non-stop intensity. Whatever it is you do to restore your reserves, do it, and you'll regain your stamina almost at once.
Gemini May 21-June 21
Moderation is the key to handling mixed messages, so rather than moving into action at any or every opportunity, wait until all the information is collected and analyzed. It may not be easy maintaining your balance, but it will be worth it.
Cancer June 22-July 22
You're definitely in the spotlight, and while the attention feels terrific it could also make you self-conscious, especially if you believe your popularity will diminish opportunities for others to shine. While that won't be a problem, rather than worry, be proactive, and shine your nurturing light gladly on others and their accomplishments.
Leo July 23-August 22
Harnessing the intensity is as simple as taking a deep breath and allowing instinct and intuition to guide your choices. You may not make all the right moves, but your decisions will be grounded in your heart, and that authenticity will ultimately yield positive results.
Virgo August 23-September 22
A broad perspective capable of including past, present and future is what you need to gain the clarity you're craving on a certain situation that just won't shift. Give yourself permission to be detached from the outcome, and you'll find the stance that will allow you to gain new insight into a possible solution.
Libra September 23-October 22
What's tried and true, while not necessarily exciting, is often the most trustworthy and reliable. Rather than be bedazzled by the glitz and glamour of the thrill, lean on long-standing relationships with friends, solicit their advice, and rely on that support to help you work your way through any confusion.
Scorpio October 23-Nov. 21
It feels like a standoff because in certain ways it is-you feel the need to insist and others feel the need to resist and no one is going to budge for fear of losing ground. But mostly, being that adamant is exhausting, so let go of the need to be in control and find the safe and solid ground of compromise.
Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21
Assume the default setting of flexibility and be ready to roll with a variety of tremors, internal and external, large and small, physical and metaphysical, as events turn several situations perplexing. It's not that there aren't "right" answers; it's just that uncovering those answers will take intuition rather than intellect.
Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19
Casual conversations could trigger a landslide of emotional responses, particularly when what's said is completely unexpected. Don't dismiss these interactions because they make you uncomfortable. There is much to be learned through this process and you will emerge with an improved perspective.
Aquarius January 20-Feb. 18
There's no need to resent demands on your time and energy if you're enjoying what you're doing. So before you protest out of habit, check in and see if what's bothering you has more to do with the unconscious behavior of others than it does with your personal dissatisfaction.
Pisces February 19-March 20
The key is figuring out how to establish and maintain your inner certainty in the midst of so much "madness." Here's some help: If you rely on empathy to help guide your choices, you will remember, even when you're lost in a flood of emotions, to look at the situation through the eyes of others. Compassion will always provide an antidote.
